PR is very white and middle class. Surely the industry should do more to broaden its intake?
I suspect there are two key reasons for PR’s whiteness. The first is a lack of role models, both in real life and media portrayals. Ab Fab, Sex and the City, Thank You for Smoking and The Thick of It are all screamingly white and middle class.
With an absence of role models goes an absence of contacts. The shame of unpaid internships has made contacts and money almost essential to getting started in PR. Hopefully, the PRWeek and PRCA campaign to pay interns will change that, as will PR apprenticeships and the emergence of some non-white PR stars in real life and on screen.
PR is also very female and young, but that is another issue.
