He will be working with shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander and shadow Cabinet Office minister Michael Dugher.

The campaign was previously led by Tom Watson, who resigned from the position following allegations in July that the Unite union had attempted to influence the vote for the next Labour candidate in Falkirk.

Livermore has led Blue Rubicon’s strategy consultancy Thirty Six Strategy since early 2012, having joined the agency in 2009. The consultancy was founded to apply political campaigning techniques to the boardroom.

He was previously director of political strategy at 10 Downing Street while Gordon Brown was prime minister, but departed in 2008.

Blue Rubicon is to replace him with its board director and former Thirty Six Strategy associate director Patrick Loughran, who joined the agency in 2011 after serving as a special adviser to Labour minister Lord Mandelson.
