Hit or miss? Taste test for the £250,000 'Frankenburger'

A burger grown in a laboratory from stem cells was sampled by food experts in front of journalists this week.

Costing £250,000 and taking two months to produce, the 5oz 'cultured beef' patty was unveiled to the press and tasted at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, London. It was quickly dubbed the 'Frankenburger'.

It was developed by Dr Mark Post at Maastricht University, with financial backing from Google co-founder Sergey Brin.

How I See It

This week saw a mad scientist attempting to improve animal welfare by manipulating the food chain and growing meat in a lab to produce the first ever artificially grown burger.

This was always going to be a dynamite story. The minute you launch a product where you’ve got stem cell technology on one side and food on the other you’ve created an emotional and moral chasm so deep that everyone will have an opinion.

The launch itself was a newsworthy affair where two volunteers got to taste the burger and all the other media got to report it. 

Would they have got more news coverage if they’d been able to invite more journalists to taste it? Probably not.

Would the coverage have been more balanced and feature-led? Probably.

Will anyone buy it in ten years' time when it potentially becomes widely available? Not in Waitrose is my guess.
