A 15-minute walk after each meal could help older people to regulate their blood sugar levels and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

A study by researchers at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services in Washington in the US found that three short post-meal walks were just as effective at reducing people’s blood sugar levels during24- hour period as a 45-minute walk at the same pace.

In addition, researchers found that a short walk was significantly more effective at lowering older people’s blood sugar levels for up to three hours after an evening meal compared with a longer, more sustained walk. 

PR strategy

The comms team at George Washington University is regularly sent research by faculty members in advance of it being published. Press officers seek out the most newsworthy pieces to release to the media. A press release was prepared for the diabetes study and sent to the EurekAlert and Newswise wires, as well as selected health reporters, under embargo.

Researchers from the project were made available for interview. After the news went live, the university team put out an alert on Twitter and ran the story on its Facebook page.

The story was covered by the Daily Mail, The Times, Daily Express and the BBC. It was also featured in the US by newspaper USA Today and major broadcasters NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox News.
