The advisory and support body for employers in the health service has launched its NHS Engage campaign to showcase the benefits of NHS leadership communicating transparently in the digital age.
NHS Employers chief executive Dean Royles told PRWeek the campaign would use the hashtag #NHSEngage to build conversations online. In addition a series of blogs written by five NHS chief executives, including himself and Lisa Rodrigues, the head of mental health trust Sussex Partnership, will be published in an attempt to ‘lead by example’.
The activity will culminate at a conference for health service leaders run by the NHS Confederation in June. NHS Employers is preparing a ‘how-to guide to social media for NHS chief executives’, which will be issued at the event.
Royles said: ‘Getting senior leaders involved with this campaign will help to drive the use of digital communication and to engage them with the broader professional and corporate benefits of using social media.
‘Having health service leaders, alongside medical and nursing directors, more active on Facebook and Twitter, instead of just leaving it to corporate comms, will create a more transparent and open culture with staff, people across the NHS and stakeholders.’
NHS Employers kicked off the year by targeting NHS human resources departments with a new guide laying out the reasons why social media platforms are becoming increasingly important to the way hospitals, trusts and staff communicate with each other.
