Tiernan joins on 4 July as director of corporate affairs and comms. He will take charge of how the hospitals engage with patients, local people and other external stakeholders such as MPs, councils, patient groups and charities.

The trust’s former director of comms, Elizabeth Rippon, left in February to undertake other project work in the wider NHS. Tiernan will report to chief executive Samantha Jones.

In addition to the comms function, Tiernan will manage the trust’s board and its committees, as well as its websites and social media presence. He will also be responsible for communicating developments at the trust to staff and volunteers.

Tiernan has held the position of director of corporate affairs and comms at Epsom and St Helier for five years.

During his time there he helped secure £219m of government funding for a major redevelopment of the organisation’s three hospitals. Before that, he spent four years as deputy director of comms at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, where he helped launch the £60m Evelina children’s hospital.

Tiernan said he was keen to make sure the trust is using modern technology to its best advantage, from websites to social media such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

‘Social media has had an amazing impact on our society and we need to make better use of it within the NHS,’ he added.
