Business for Britain is headed by Matthew Elliott, the founder of the TaxPayers’ Alliance and Big Brother Watch, and intended as a show of support by the business community for the renegotiation strategy.

The Prime Minister recently said he would seek a ‘mandate’ for a renegotiation in the next Conservative election manifesto and pledged that if he won the 2015 contest he would hold a referendum on Britain being in or out of Europe by the end of 2017.

The 500 names include former Marks & Spencer executive chairman Sir Stuart Rose, Next chief executive Baron Simon Wolfson and Phones4U billionaire Simon Caudwell.

In addition to the Bell Pottinger Private chairman and the Maitland chairman, PR industry backers include Fishburn Hedges founder and former chairman Dale Fishburn and Indigo Public Affairs managing director Richard Patient.

Elliott said: ‘There has been some great work done on the thinking and diplomacy side of the EU debate, but I think the time is right for a fully-fledged campaign.’
