INTERNATIONAL: Comms offensive to boost Africa's coffee producers

ABIDJAN: The Interafrican Coffee Organisation (IACO) is on the hunt

for PR help as part of a global communications drive to promote African

coffee.



The association confirmed it would earmark cash for the communications

project at a two-day conference held in the Ivory Coast last week.



And the IACO - which represents the 25 leading African coffee-producing

nations, which collectively produce 16 per cent of world coffee - has

said it plans to take on an agency to spearhead the PR drive.



Since 1996, coffee prices have dropped considerably and the IACO said it

hopes a worldwide PR push will help combat the decline of the African

coffee market.



The IACO recently appointed Ivory Coast commerce minister Eric-Victor

Kahe Kplohourou as its president.



Set up in 1960, the IACO has a mission to improve productivity and

quality of African coffee and to help eradicate poverty in

coffee-producing countries.
