Vodafone takeover work puts Tavistock in top slot

City and corporate PR consultancy Tavistock Communications has

jumped to the top of the M&A PR adviser table for the first time with

its work for 13-year retained client Vodafone.

Tavistock jumped one place to take the top slot in PRWeek's October

ranking of M&A PR advisers, notching up eight deals worth a total of

more than £9bn - of which £8.5bn came from handling

Vodafone's protracted takeover of Japan Telecom.

The 30-strong agency advised Vodafone on PR surrounding the deal to

increase its stake in Japan Telecom, the largest telecoms group in

Japan, from 45 per cent to 66.7 per cent.

Gavin Anderson's Tokyo office also advised Vodafone on the acquisition,

which was completed in mid-October, taking the financial PR consultancy

into second place.

The Deal Watch figures, compiled exclusively for PRWeek by corporate

finance information service Zephus, reveal previous league leader

Brunswick slipped into fourth place advising on 14 deals worth £1.9bn last month, a drop of £10.6bn since September.

According to the data, compiled from publicised deals involving at least

one UK company, Financial Dynamics moved up six places to third, working

on more deals than any other financial PR firm in the October

league.

Cordiant Communications-owned FD advised on 16 deals totalling £2.7bn.

The firm worked on one of the month's biggest deals, handling PR for

private equity group Cinven, involved in the £1.2bn sale of UK

publishing group IPC to AOL's magazine division Time Inc, which

completed last month.

October also saw the announcement of American Electric's £649m

agreed bid for coal-fired power stations in Fiddler's Ferry, Cheshire,

and Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire, handled by WPP-owned Finsbury, which

ranked fifth in the table.

Weber Shandwick Worldwide's newly merged financial PR offering Weber

Shandwick Square Mile entered the table in its new form for the first

time, taking sixth position.

The agency, created early last month from the merger of Golin/Harris

Ludgate, Square Mile BSMG Worldwide and WSW's City PR division, advised

on 12 deals worth a combined value of £587m.

The October Deal Watch also saw Atlantic PR enter the Top 10 for the

first time. It advised the management team in charge of Jim Beam's

Scottish spirits business on its £208m MBO of the company, renamed

Kyndal International.

Atlantic, which is based in Edinburgh and run by co-founder and managing

director Malcolm Brown, handled investor and media relations, public

affairs, media training and internal communications surrounding the

deal, which was the largest ever MBO undertaken in Scotland.
