(saving) on expenses - 1776, London EC3

Danny Rogers, editor-in-chief, PRWeek

What is it good for?

The Bank area of the City of London is not the easiest place to find restaurants where one can have a relaxed, quiet conversation with clients or journalists. So this elegant eaterie, just a gold coin's throw from the Bank of England, is a welcome opening here.

1776 is the year that this Grade II-listed former bank is thought to have been built.

Signature dishes

Winter comfort food with strong flavours, such as fillet of Black Angus beef with herb crust and snails, or caramelised black cod with ponzu sauce, are highly recommended.

Who's the boss?

Soren Jessen, the founder of the famous and cavernous 1 Lombard Street restaurant/bar.

Tips please

As an intimate dining experience, the manager and staff will tailor dishes to your personal taste, so take advantage of their advice and flexibility. Get the waiter to choose you a nicely matched wine by the glass from his special iPad app.

What's the damage?

This is the City, so expect starters to range from £15, with main courses from £25.

1776, Mansion House Place, London, EC3V 9AA. 020 7929 6611.
