A matrix devised by the CIPR takes into account efficacy of outputs such as newsletters and social media, tone of voice and consistency, and opportunities for employees to have their say.
The research concludes that 'best practice goes beyond the inclusion of a few comms questions in an annual employee engagement survey' and recommends 'regular and real-time reporting'.
Internal comms often ranks as a 'poor relation' in the comms mix, according to Kevin Ruck, chair of internal comms group CIPR Inside, who led the study.
He added: 'There's evidence to show that high levels of employee engagement equate to better performance. The importance of internal comms is known but resources don't always follow through.'
