A survey of PRCA members has revealed that, while 65 per cent felt Entwistle’s resignation was the right move, 59 per cent thought it would nevertheless have a negative impact on the broadcaster’s image.

The poll of 136 PR professionals showed that nine out of ten were of the opinion that the BBC’s handling of the Newsnight North Wales report falsely pointing to a senior Tory – identified as Lord McAlpine online – as being implicated in child sex abuse, had also been damaging.

However, calls for the cancellation of Newsnight were muted – only seven per cent of respondents supported the idea.
