MEDIA: ITN to remain lead provider of news, suggests report

ITN's dominance of news provision will continue even if it does not

retain the contract to supply ITV news, suggests an independent

survey.

A report by Indepen Consulting stated that an alternative news provider,

such as Channel Three News - a consortium comprising Chrysalis, Ulster

TV, BSkyB, CBS News and Bloomberg - would give UK viewers more

choice.

But ITN, which also supplies news for Channel 4 and Channel 5, would

still have a greater market share of news than any individual consortium

member, according to the report.

Despite this, challenging the dominance of BBC and ITN in the news arena

would be a positive move towards increased competition, Indepen

concluded.

Until now ITN has supplied ITV's news. But it will be given a run for

its money by Channel Three News's participation in the first competitive

tender for the service. The contract runs for five years from December

2002.
