PUBLIC SECT0R: Leeds 2007 tram scheme to crank up PR operations

A £500m tram scheme in Leeds is to boost its PR.

Metro - the co-ordination body for transport in West Yorkshire and which

runs the Supertram project - has created its first communications role

dedicated to the promotion of the scheme.

The PRO will be tasked with media relations at a local, regional and

national level, and will report to Metro head of PR Martin Driver, and

Mick Martin, who took up the post of Supertram project director last

month.

Leeds Supertram received the go-ahead for £500m funding from the

Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions in March.

Remaining funds will come from the eventual tram operator, West

Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority and Leeds City Council.

Once completed in 2007, it is anticipated that it will carry more than

22 million people per year.
