MEDIA: BBC disbands its Worldwide new ventures division

BBC Worldwide's director of new ventures and strategy has quit

after a review of the corporation's commercial arm.

Jeremy Mayhew, credited with creating beeb.com and beeb.net, left last

week to 'pursue career opportunities elsewhere,' a statement said.

Mayhew joined in 1995 as director of new media, in charge of overseeing

the division's internet and multimedia publishing businesses. Four years

later he became new ventures and strategy director, tasked with

strategic planning, driving growth and developing commercial

relationships.

One of Mayhew's final acts was to lead the division's contribution to

the review, under which his position was made redundant.

BBC Worldwide director of comms Janie Ironside Wood said the central

six-strong new ventures and strategy unit had been disbanded and staff

redeployed to Worldwide's operating units, which include consumer

publishing, international TV and education.
