Hurst, who joined the agency in 2007, had been executive vice-president for technology.

He replaces Caibre Sugrue, who left in April to become general manager for the UK at Waggener Edstrom.

During his time at Edelman, Hurst has worked on accounts such as Microsoft, Motorola and Hewlett-Packard, running both UK and international programmes across up to 50 countries in EMEA.

As part of the Edelman EMEA strategy working group, he has also played a role in shaping thinking around influencer engagement, driving integration of social, digital and multiscreen/multichannel content approaches at the agency.

Hurst, who had also led training across the EMEA region, said he was ‘honoured’ to be given the new role, adding: ‘It’s such an exciting time to be in the technology space.'

Steve Spurr, COO, said: ‘We are delighted that Matt has taken this role and look forward to his guidance and leadership. In the five years that Matt has been with Edelman he has more than proven his skills as a dedicated PR practitioner, as well as being a talented role model and leader.’
