Radio 1 PR head to join government youth policy unit

The BBC is to lose Radio 1 and BBC Choice publicity head Paul

Simpson, as he takes up the top communications role at the Government's

new Children and Young People's Unit.

Working across government departments, the body will co-ordinate policy

towards young people and seeks to increase their involvement in

decision-making.

The unit supports minister for young people John Denham and is led by

director Althea Efunshile.

Simpson joined the BBC four years ago to promote Radio 1, and assumed

the mantle of BBC Choice publicity manager in April this year as part of

a new youth-oriented team (PRWeek, 20 April).

He previously worked in Westminster as a press officer for the Liberal

Democrats, having assisted the party's former leadership contender Simon

Hughes MP.

The BBC is hoping to fill the publicity manager post in the coming

weeks, ahead of Simpson's departure for Whitehall towards the end of

October.
