The agency fought off competition in a three-way pitch shoot-out to handle the first retained social media brief for the company’s Microsoft Advertising arm.

It will involve 3 Monkeys social media team working with the in-house team at MSA, which oversees advertising on Microsoft’s social platforms including Bing, Skype and MSN.

The brief builds on 3 Monkey’s work on the company’s trade marketing and consumer PR remit, and expands 3 Monkeys' social media team’s portfolio.

The appointment also follows news that the tech giant is understood to have cut a number of advertising jobs in recent months amid rising costs brought on partly by a shift to cloud software.

The agency team will be led by associate director Sarah Ogden, who will report to Donna Hindson, trade marketing director of Microsoft’s A&O division in the UK.

Sarah Ogden, associate director at 3 Monkeys, said that the role of social media was an ‘evolving focus for the business’.

‘Microsoft has already made inroads in social media and this is about taking it to the next level,’ she added.

‘Creativity will be key in making sure we’ve got really useful content that can engage our audiences in an authentic way. Microsoft is a trusted authority in the digital space and has a lot of say about where the industry is going. There’s a lot of opportunity for them to provide useful thought leadership in terms of the opportunity that multi-platform digital campaigns offer when it comes to engaging new and existing audiences.’

Hindson added: ‘In a dynamic and competitive market, 3 Monkeys has expanded our trade profile over the past year and now we’re keen to work hand-in-hand with them on our social media activity. We want to build on our momentum and amply further our social presence in the UK and feel 3 Monkeys is an excellent partner to help us do this.’
