FTI's strategic comms business will provide international media support to the United Nations-accredited global energy body around its flagship triennial congress, to be held in Daegu, Korea in October 2013.
The agency won the lucrative brief via a competitive pitch against other global networks including Porter Novelli, Ogilvy, Weber Shandwick and InComm Brodeur.
The tagline for the 2013 event is 'securing tomorrow's energy today' and the agency has been charged with highlighting and creating debate around the key global issues facing the entire spectrum of the energy industry.
The organisation represents the whole of the energy sector, rather than a specific part, with members ranging from power and petroleum firms to renewables, governments and NGOs.
Stuart Neil, the former press secretary to the Queen who joined the World Energy Council to head comms in March last year, told PRWeek: 'We need to engage in the vital debate around energy security in a more energised way, particularly in light of events such as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the Fukushima nuclear disaster and the rising oil price in the Middle East.'
FTI will run the account from London, where the World Energy Council is headquartered, and Seoul, where the World Energy Congress Daegu 2013 organising committee is based.
London-based MD Sean Galvin, in partnership with Mike Breen, chairman of FTI Consulting's exclusive Korean affiliate, Insight Communications, will lead the account.
Galvin commented: 'The debate around the future of energy is now at the very top of the global agenda. We will look to make as many people as possible aware of the issues and involved in the discussion so that positive progress can be made at Daegu next year.'
