UK publishers already associated with the app include the BBC, Condé Nast and Dennis Publishing.
The app, which is the highest grossing iPad app in France with more than half a million downloads, offers users 10 magazines for £10 – unlike Apple's Newsstand which only allows individual subscriptions.
Diffusion is charged with running a trade outreach programme to help drive publisher sign-ups, and generating consumer coverage to encourage downloads.
Co-founder of Lekiosk Michael Philippe said: ‘Lekiosk has enjoyed incredible success in France where it is currently found on 1 in 4 iPads, but we knew it would be a challenge to recreate this in the UK as it is a very different and saturated market. That’s why finding the right agency was so important to us as we wanted to work with a team with the right industry knowledge and media contacts to make the launch a real success.’
YouGov research, commissioned by Lekiosk, shows that 38 per cent of Brits read fewer magazines today than they did at the start of the recession and that 70 per cent cite the cost of magazines as the reason.
