Woodroof moves from his role as account manager in Hill + Knowlton Strategies' sports division.

He replaces Mark Ward, who moved to premiership football team Tottenham Hotspur as head of comms.

Woodroof is responsible for developing the ECB’s PR strategy, promoting its commercial partnerships, national teams, first class domestic cricket and grass roots such as schools.

He reports to the ECB's director of marketing and comms Steve Elworthy and commercial director John Perera.

Woodroof told PRWeek: ‘Having joined midway through the season, I will focus my attention on understanding our partners' objectives and securing mutually beneficial media coverage for cricket in a summer packed full of sport.’

Cricket continues to struggle against allegations of match fixing. On 22 June the ECB handed Danish Kaneria a life ban from playing in England and Wales after he was found guilty of corruption.

It was found that the Pakistan leg-spinner encouraged former Essex teammate Mervyn Westfield to spot-fix.

Westfield was jailed for four months in February after being found guilty of deliberately bowling badly in a CB40 game against Durham in 2009.
