Healthcare firms get together for breakaway body

Leading healthcare PR firms have formed a dedicated trade body that

includes in-house communicators for the first time.

Red Door Communications MD Catherine Warne is to chair The Healthcare

Communications Association, an industry body set up to promote best

practice in healthcare PR.

Warne is joined in the HCA, which she claims has been in the pipeline

for 18 months, by representatives of Shire Hall Communications, Munro &

Forster, and Athena Medical PR.

Significantly, the HCA also includes the directors of corporate affairs

at GlaxoSmithKline, Eli Lilly, Novartis, AstraZeneca and Schering

Plough.

Warne, who chaired the now-defunct healthcare group of the PRCA's Best

Practice committee, said the aim of the body was to provide assistance

with training and evaluation.

'It was felt that healthcare as a sector stands quite separate from

other areas of PR. The PRCA is quite generalist and, particularly in

terms of training and evaluation, healthcare requires special

attention,' Warne said.

Leader, p12.
