Broadgate Mainland has won a competitive pitch to manage the PR activities of Thomas Miller Investment, the asset management arm of the 127-year-old Thomas Miller Group. Director Roland Cross and executive director Roddi Vaughan Thomas will lead the account.

Porta Communications, the recently established AIM-listed comms business, recorded a £1.5m loss in 2011 after setting up Newgate Communications and buying Threadneedle Communications (renamed Newgate Threadneedle). Revenues topped £1m during the year.

Capital MSL has appointed Simon Evans as associate director in its financial institutions practice. He joins Capital MSL from Weber Shandwick where he was head of business media, associate director. He was formerly deputy business editor of The Independent on Sunday newspaper for nearly three years.

HiWave Technologies, a UK-listed electronic components firm, has appointed FTI Consulting as its financial PR adviser.

Smithfield has promoted Ged Brumby to director. He joined as an associate director last July from Citigate Dewe Rogerson.
