Smithfield takes top spot thanks to De Beers work

Smithfield Financial has claimed pole position in the June City PR

M&A adviser league table, knocking Brunswick off the top spot for the

first time.

Chime Communications-owned Smithfield boosted its position from ninth

place in May to first in June by advising on pounds 20.2bn-worth of M&A

deals in the UK, according to the ranking complied exclusively for

PRWeek by corporate finance information service Zephus.

The agency has overtaken Brunswick for the first time since the PRWeek

Deal Watch series launched two months ago (PRWeek, 18 May).

But additional year-to-date figures from Zephus show Brunswick remains

overall leader, advising on a total of 33 deals worth pounds 46.6bn

since January this year.

Both Smithfield and Brunswick recorded high deal values in the June M&A

league - which is compiled according to publicised deals involving at

least one UK company - through their work on the pounds 13bn deal to

take diamond giant De Beers private, which was completed early last

month.

The Smithfield team also advised on the second largest deal of the

month, handling all City PR surrounding the pounds 6.7bn acquisition of

London-based mining group Billiton by Australian mining firm Broken Hill

Proprietary Company - a pounds 19.8bn merger which created BHP

Billiton.

Financial Dynamics came in third behind Brunswick, working on 22 deals

worth pounds 6.9bn, including the pounds 2.3bn bid for BT's property

portfolio by client Telereal, the joint venture set up by Land

Securities and William Pears Group.

Previous high ranker Tavistock Communications dropped out of the June

table, largely due to the prior completion of a number of deals

involving long-term client Vodafone.
