MEDIA: PC Gear online is saved as Dennis chops magazine

Dennis Publishing's PC Gear website - at theden.co.uk - has been

granted a reprieve, despite the end of its offline magazine after just

seven months.

PC Gear was Dennis's attempt to gain a foothold in the PC leisure

market, to complement its place in the games and business sectors.

But sales were poor and WHSmith removed the title from its shelves - a

mortal blow since the retailer accounts for a quarter of UK sales for

computer magazines.

There will be redundancies, but it is not known if they include PC Gear

editor Dylan Armburst. He had been launch editor of Future Publishing's

aborted Project Click (PRWeek, 15 December 2000) before joining

Dennis.

Maintaining PC Gear online is seen by Dennis as a low-cost option.

Online editor Darren Lock will produce daily news as well as product

reviews.
