English rugby's former comms chief has taken a role as Bloomberg's top communicator in Europe.

Peter Thomas left his post as corporate comms and public affairs director at the Rugby Football Union in July as crisis enveloped the game.

His resignation followed a turbulent time for English rugby, which saw chief executive John Steele sacked amid bitter divisions in the organisation. After Steele’s departure, Thomas was widely reported to have felt his position was ‘untenable’.

Following a period working as a freelance consultant, he has joined Bloomberg as head of EMEA comms, based in London.

PRWeek wrote in May that Bloomberg was seeking a senior London-based comms person. It is thought that Bloomberg, which is expanding its media operation in Europe, is looking to raise its profile.

Thomas previously spent close to a decade at Hill & Knowlton, before leaving in 2004 to become marketing and comms director at Accenture UK and Ireland. He joined the RFU in 2009 and spent just over two years in the post.

He will work closely with Catrin Thomas, head of news and media comms, who joined from CNN in June.

Thomas said: 'This was a fantastic opportunity to work for a premium brand. Bloomberg has bold plans for growth over the coming years and the opportunity to be a part of that in Europe was impossible to resist. I will be working closely with Catrin Thomas and the European marketing team to tell our story to existing and new audiences.'
