David Nicholas will head Telefónica Digital’s comms function from the unit’s new headquarters in London and his team will also include comms professionals in the US, Latin America and Spain.

He was previously director of communications for Telefónica Europe and, prior to that, for O2.

Additionally, Nick Wilkins has been appointed director of media relations and Steve Bartholomew has been appointed director of public affairs. Wilkins was previously senior PR manager for O2 in the UK, while Bartholomew was previously head of public affairs for O2 in the UK.

Nicholas said: ‘Telecommunications companies have been slow to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the new digital world. This new business unit will have the speed and agility to allow us to bring to market innovations in areas as wide ranging as entertainment, financial services and advertising.’

Telefónica Digital was formed by Telefónica in September 2011. Telefónica itself operates using the O2 brand in Europe, Movistar in Spain and Latin America, and Vivo in Brazil.
