Ogilvy adds corp comms to remits for retailer Argos

Argos has taken on Ogilvy PR to handle its first corporate

communications brief.

The decision strengthens the links between Argos and the agency, which

has handled its consumer account since 1999.

Directors Barbara McCall and Judith Thompson head a four-strong team

from Ogilvy's corporate practice and report to media relations manager

Sheila Williams, who heads Argos's two-strong in-house corporate media

team.

The agency was appointed without a pitch for the account, which is

renewed in 12 months.

Thompson said the agency has a brief to boost the retail chain's profile

among the trade media and to increase the profile of the stores at a

local level.

It will also focus on Argos's website - www.argos.co.uk - and online

business.

Williams said: 'We felt there was a need to take on an agency to assist

with the regional and corporate profile of Argos. We have 471 stores and

we want to raise their individual profile.'

The consumer account is headed by marketing practice MD Nicola Hyde.

Argos is owned by Manchester-based Great Universal Stores (GUS), which

acquired the catalogue specialist retailer in 1998 in a hostile

takeover.

Argos accounts for 70 per cent of GUS sales.
