The video sharing website, which has 5.6 million registered users, has hired Nikki Thompson as its European PR lead. She joins from JCPR ahead of the planned opening of a new London office later this year.

Vimeo is working with Red Robin on a project basis in the UK, but Thompson is tasked with finding a new European PR agency. She will also build a European team and will be responsible for the planning, strategy and management of all European PR activity for the company.

She said: ‘I’m going to use my knowledge of the European market and the media to localise stories and help broaden Vimeo’s exposure.’

Thompson will be based in London and will report to global comms director Deborah Szajngarten at Vimeo’s New York base. Szajngarten said: ‘Vimeo has a massive underground following and we want Nikki to help that become more widespread.’

Vimeo has 50 million monthly uniques worldwide. Revenue comes from advertising and services such as Vimeo Plus. Unlike YouTube, Vimeo does not place adverts on uploads to the site.

Thompson joins from her role as account director at JCPR. She has previously worked at Weber Shandwick, Hotwire and Ranieri Communications.
