17 October: We Need To Talk About Kevin UK premiere BFI London Film Festival. Film features Tilda Swinton, Ezra Miller and John C Reilly.

18 October: Man Booker Prize winner announced Guildhall, London. Publishers were asked to submit entries in both digital and physical form for the first time this year.

19 October: The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh begin 11-day Australia trip Canberra. The royal couple then travel to Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth in Western Australia.

20 October 2011: Turner Prize exhibition press preview BALTIC, Gateshead. Shortlisted artists are Karla Black, Martin Boyce, Hilary Lloyd and George Shaw. The winner is to be announced on 5 December.

22 October: SNP annual conference Eden Court Theatre, Inverness. SNP leader and First Minister Alex Salmond delivers his keynote speech.

24 October: Q Awards 2011 Grosvenor House Hotel, London. Annual music awards voted for by readers of Q Magazine. Arctic Monkeys lead the nominations with four.
