LABOUR PARTY CONFERENCE DIARY 2000

Spin still high on the agenda

Spin still high on the agenda

Culture secretary Chris Smith took a different view to most when he claimed that the Government's problems stemmed not from too much spin, but from too little.

Addressing the Guardian debate on Monday on whether Labour was losing touch with its roots, Smith said: 'We need to be more forthright in telling the people what our achievements are. We've been doing far better than we claim publicly.'

Asked by Guardian political editor Michael White whether the Government has 'acted left and spun right', Smith stated this was a 'crude analysis'.

Significantly he did not refute the claim.
