BRUSSELS: Hill and Knowlton International has won a four-year PR brief worth nearly pounds 3 million in fee income from the European Commission in Brussels.

BRUSSELS: Hill and Knowlton International has won a four-year PR brief worth nearly pounds 3 million in fee income from the European Commission in Brussels.

The agency's Belgian office clinched the pan-European account after a competitive pitch, believed to include up to five other agencies.

H&K's task is to handle all media relations, events and tools (such as videos and CD-Roms) for the Research DG and the Joint Research Centre of the EC, which handles scientific research issues.

The account team will be led out of Brussels by H&K Belgium director of public relations Sam Rowe, but will also tap into the agency's network across the 15 EU member states and the first wave of countries set to join the EU, such as Poland and Hungary.

'Our job is to tell the media about the EC's research and demonstrate to the public that money spent by the EC is bringing benefits to everyone,' said Rowe, who reports to the European Commission for Research head of unit, Dr Juergen Rosenbaum.

H&K's first promotion project will be for the EC's results on research into forest fires, which this year caused havoc across Greece.

The account win marks H&K's second EC contract. In 1998, the Commission hired H&K's Belgian operation to handle all PR for the Regional Policy DG, which is also a four-year account, worth over pounds 4 million in fee income.

- H&K has named the new director-general of its Paris operations as Stephane Billiet. He joins from French PR agency BDDP Corporate, where he worked for eight years as account director, associate director of PR accounts and lastly associate manager.
