EDITORIAL: Independents still have their PR day

Another week, another independent City PR acquisition. However, as the number of established independents is eaten away by the rush to include financial PR as part of a full service PR offering, it would be foolish to predict the end of independent City PR advice.

Another week, another independent City PR acquisition. However, as the number of established independents is eaten away by the rush to include financial PR as part of a full service PR offering, it would be foolish to predict the end of independent City PR advice.

Instead, as the independence of established City players such as Square Mile and Hudson Sadler comes to an end, there are plenty of healthy young financial PR entrepreneurs ready to take their place.

To those who say the end of the financial independents is nigh, look at this week's news pages: Cubitt Consulting appointed by Bradford and Bingley and Tulchan working for Scottish Power. Both agencies are run by experienced financial PROs with backgrounds in established firms.

Meanwhile, there are rumours that Citigate Dewe Rogerson deputy chairman Cary Martin and international MD Kevin Soady are to set up their own independent in the new year. All are flying the flag for independents.

The City PR landscape is diversifying, not contracting. The marketing services giants may have moved in, but there is still room for the creativity and lack of client conflict independence allows. All of which makes for a very healthy financial PR climate.
