Due to the fragmentation and speed of the media, coupled with the growth of the internet, there is a greater need for a holistic approach to marketing across disciplines, he said.

'PR and public affairs people need to work closer together,' said Smith, 'whether within the same company or across separate agencies.'

Edelman account handler Jeremy Browne, gave the British Airways London Eye and the Millennium Dome as examples of clients for whom the agency had run integrated programmes.
