One hundred and eighty-four businesses - a record number - have completed its annual Index of Corporate Environmental Engagement survey. This is an increase of 22 per cent on last year. However, the contribution of firms towards the reduction of global warming emissions was 'pitiful'.

Partnerships UK chairman Derek Hoggs said the single most important fact about the index is that 'year-on-year, more firms are taking the trouble to assess and report on their environmental performance'.

The BiE index aims to compare companies' environmental performance objectively.

Its findings are used by the government to track progress in corporate environmental reporting.
