The former PRCA chairman has been asked to grow the agency’s five-strong London team as well as help drive business across its offices in Brussels, Paris and Hamburg.
He will also help the agency develop business in the IT sector to add to its current portfolio of food, chemicals and life sciences clients.
James Hunt, CEO of Aspect, said of the appointment: ‘Richard brings nearly 25 years of public relations experience which includes hands-on management of agencies of all sizes, and advising senior clients.’
Houghton retains a small interest in Carrot, which he set up ten years ago and which will now be led by MD Kate Hartley.
He said after ten years heading up Carrot he was looking for a new challenge, adding: ‘The growth in the use of digital and social media in corporate communications gives me plenty of scope to help build clients’ digital footprint.’
Hunt co-founded Aspect with Frans Green in November 2004 and the agency now employs 40 staff and has a turnover of around 3.5m euros.
Houghton's appointment follows that of former easyJet comms chief Toby Nicol, who joined as head of transport and travel in May this year.
Prior to Carrot, Houghton had senior roles at Weber Shandwick, Fleishman-Hillard and Ketchum, where he worked with Hartley.
