Public Affairs: The Week in Lobbying

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has recruited Liberal Democrat aide Kate Heywood as public affairs adviser.

Heywood joins later this month from a dual role as the Liberal Democrats' party governance manager and adviser to party president, Tim Farron MP.

Ovarian Cancer Action has appointed Simon Denegri, CEO of the Association of Medical Research Charities, as its new chief executive. Denegri started his career as an account executive at Westminster Strategy.

Save Our Pubs & Clubs, which is campaigning for a review of the smoking ban, has signed up Conservative MP Greg Knight, Labour MP Roger Godsiff and the Lib Dems' John Hemming to host a House of Commons reception on 29 June. The group represents more than 2,000 working men's clubs. Campaigners want a review of the ban and the legislation amended to allow pubs and clubs to have 'well-ventilated smoking rooms'.

Connect Communications has hosted its first 'Connect Intelligence' evening. At the event on 24 May, Connect MD Gill Morris hosted a discussion with The Guardian's Michael White, the Daily Mirror's Kevin Maguire, LBC's Iain Dale and ComRes' Andrew Hawkins.
