Emap veteran Mark Ellen has been made editor-in-chief of men's lifestyle magazine Arena.

Emap veteran Mark Ellen has been made editor-in-chief of men's lifestyle magazine Arena.

Former editor Greg Williams now takes the title of 'editor at large'.

Although details are sketchy, the company said this will involve an extension of his remit across other titles, including twice-yearly fashion magazine Arena Homme Plus.

'Greg is still contributing heavily to Arena,' a spokesman insisted.

'But he has been in the role for some time and his remit is broadening.'

Emap would not confirm that Ellen's appointment signals a change of direction for Arena.

Ellen has held prominent positions on a variety of Emap titles, including Q, over the last decade, and most recently on Heat. But he was not available for comment. 'He wants to wait until his ideas are set in place,' a member of his team said.

Simmy Richman remains as managing editor.

Emap bought Wagadon, which published Arena and style magazine The Face, in May 1999.
