PRWeek revealed that MetLife had launched a full-scale review of its UK and European PR support, putting incumbent Citigate on alert (prweek.com/uk, 16 March).

It is understood that the US-based insurance giant solicited submissions from as many as 12 agencies, with four invited to pitch. It is understood that Citigate has retained the account, beating off agencies thought to include 3 Monkeys and Lansons Communications.

The brief, which includes corporate, financial services and press office aspects, is primarily UK-based. But there will be opportunities for sporadic international work in Ireland, Poland, Greece and Spain, where MetLife offers products.

Citigate declined to comment and MetLife could not be reached for comment.

Claire Oldstein, head of marcoms at MetLife Europe, previously told PRWeek that the pitch process was in part due to the increased breadth of the brief.

The company is aiming to expand its business throughout Europe following the $16.2bn acquisition of American Life Insurance Company last October.
