Harrison Cowley lands Continental in UK and Ireland

Continental Airlines, the world’s sixth-largest airline, has handed

its UK and Ireland PR account to Harrison Cowley following a four-way

pitch.

The account was previously held by McCann-Weber PR, which was

Continental’s first retained PR agency. However, with McCann’s London

office closing in April, Continental decided to review the account. Biss

Lancaster, Affinity and the PR arm of Continental’s advertising agency

HDM also pitched.

The brief is mainly consumer, with Harrison Cowley implementing an

extensive trade, national and regional consumer media relations

campaign. A team in London will co-ordinate offices in Edinburgh,

Manchester, Birmingham and London.

Alan Twigg, consumer director, will head the account, reporting to Ian

Brocklesby, Continental’s marketing manager, UK and Ireland.

Twigg said: ’This is a particularly exciting opportunity as we are

taking the account on at a vital time for the airline sector with

competition getting fiercer ever day.’

Continental, based in Houston, Texas, serves well over 200 destinations,

with 2,200 daily flights. In 1999 the company had sales of over pounds 5

billion.

It is involved in negotiations over the issue of which US airlines are

allowed to fly into Heathrow, to which it currently has access only

through an arrangement over block-booking seats with Virgin

Atlantic.

Hill and Knowlton is retained for the airline’s global corporate

communications.
