Capital Radio has wooed Virgin Radio’s head of press and PR, Elly

Smith, to become its first head of corporate communications.

Capital had been on the hunt for someone to fill this new senior

management post before it announced its proposed acquisition of Virgin

Radio in May - although the role could also involve overseeing

communications for Virgin if the deal gets regulatory approval.

Smith, who takes up her post immediately, will report to chief executive

Richard Eyre on corporate and group issues, and to station director

Martina King on station matters.

She will manage communications with the City, consumer and trade

media.

Her responsibilities will cover the company’s two London radio stations,

Capital 95.8 FM and Capital Gold in London, as well as Web sites,

restaurant chain My Kinda Town (which Capital bought last year) and the

Capital Cafe.

Personal publicity for breakfast DJ Chris Tarrant is still handled by

MacLaurin Communications.

Smith said she would be reviewing Capital’s internal and external PR

arrangements and may consider expanding her in-house team. PR agencies

currently used by Capital include Finsbury for financial PR and Grayling

for the Internet sites.

Smith said of her move to Virgin Radio’s former arch rival: ’If the deal

goes through there will still be healthy rivalry between the stations -

but we probably won’t go as far as we did in the past.’
