The top boys at housing PR agency phoenixplc took their commitment

to charity work to the extreme recently when they took part in a

triathlon for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Managing director Peter Knight and creative director Peter Hammond took

part in the event that would have left even Daley Thompson feeling the

strain (probably).

The ordeal started with a gruelling 1,500 metre swim in a freezing River

Thames. Once on shore, participants had to jump on a bike and race for

25 miles, then get off and run to the finishing line for the last six

miles on a specially designed track around the Isle of Dogs.

Staggeringly, both men completed the task in under three hours, with

Knight coming in at a respectable two hours and 50 minutes, and Hammond

at an even more impressive two hours and 40 minutes. Scarily, Hammond

was actually disappointed that he didn’t achieve a time under

two-and-a-half hours.

He says, with a touch of embarrassment: ’It was Peter’s first triathlon

and I have done a few before so I was expecting to beat him by more than

that.’

Nor is this the most gruelling triathlon Hammond has participated

in.

The athletic lion of PR suffered a worse test in Lanzarote, which

involved a two-and-a-half mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26-mile

run.

On this easier run, however, the two men raised pounds 3,500 for

Macmillan Cancer Relief.

But the overall winner was Simon Lessing, who beat the ’elite’

competitors to complete the course in an hour and fifty minutes.

Unsurprisingly, Knight says he found it hard, but had a great sense of

achievement at the end. They are mad enough to participate again next

year.
