25 Jan: South Bank Awards return, Sky Arts. The cultural awards, hosted by Melvyn Bragg, return on Sky Arts.

The awards celebrate the best of British culture and achievement across the arts.

The South Bank Awards moved to the Sky Arts channel after The South Bank Show was axed by ITV.

26 Jan: Australia Day. The official national day commemorating the landing of the first fleet in 1788, led by Captain Arthur Phillip, and including the announcement of the Australian of the Year.

26-30 Jan: World Economic Forum Annual Meeting Davos Klosters, Switzerland. More than 2,500 leaders from 90 countries representing business, government and civil society discuss economic issues.

28 Jan: RNLI 'SOS' national fundraising day UK and Ireland. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution's national fundraising day.

31 Jan: Opening of Heston Blumenthal restaurant in London Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel. The celebrity chef's first restaurant outside Bray, called Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, opens to the public.
