Yahoo, the world’s most visited web site, is looking to appoint an

agency on a consumer brief for the UK and Ireland.

The company is currently hearing pitches from an undisclosed number of

agencies for the brief. It will be the first time Yahoo has appointed an

agency on a retained brief. Rival search engines Lycos, Freeserve and

America Online all have UK agencies.

The move comes at a time of significant change within the company’s

overall marketing plans and it is also seeking to appoint a new

advertising agency.

At present, Yahoo has a PR team for UK and Ireland of one in-house

person - PR manager Alison Fennah. She joined last October and has a

consumer remit. Corporate PR is handled by European corporate

communications manager Sue Jackson. Fennah reports to UK marketing

manager Catherine Taylor.

Earlier this month, Yahoo lost its European corporate communications

director Lynn Shepherd who joined PricewaterhouseCoopers as an associate

at the financial PR agency which it will set up in September (PR Week, 2

June).

Shepherd has only been at Yahoo! for six months and her role is not to

be replaced. Instead, Jackson reports Jerry Glover, European Commercial

Director.

Previously, Yahoo! has used agencies, including Joe Public Relations and

Talk Loud, on projects.
