Consolidated drops long-held Avis UK account

Consolidated Communications has resigned its account with Avis, the UK’s leading car hire company.

Consolidated Communications has resigned its account with Avis, the

UK’s leading car hire company.

The account, understood to have been worth more than pounds 150,000 in

annual fees, has been held by Consolidated since 1995.

Consolidated’s founder and managing director Alastair Gornall confirmed

that the consultancy’s six-strong account team, led by board director

Katie Hatfield, was working its notice, but would not be drawn on the

reasons for the resignation.

Avis UK, a subsidiary of Avis Europe, is launching a full-scale review

of its PR function following the Consolidated resignation. Acting head

of marketing Claire Harrold confirmed that Consolidated had resigned the

account, and said the marketing team, headed by sales and marketing

director Graham Gallaher, was exploring several options. These include

hiring another agency, boosting the company’s in-house PR provision, or

a mixture of both.

This review is understood to extend only as far as Hayes-based Avis’ UK

consumer PR operation. At plc level, the firm’s financial and corporate

PR is handled by Financial Dynamics.

Harrold said that Consolidated, whose public affairs team has also

contributed to the Avis account, may continue to work for the company on

a project basis.

’There is no bad feeling, although we regret the end of a relationship

dating back several years,’ she said.
