Tigar to build new PR team at AstraZeneca

Pharmaceutical giant Astra-Zeneca has appointed Fiona Tigar as head of PR and communications for the UK.

Pharmaceutical giant Astra-Zeneca has appointed Fiona Tigar as head

of PR and communications for the UK.

She joins next week and will head a newly-created communications

department for the company, which was formed by the merger of Sweden’s

Astra and UK-based Zeneca Group, in April 1999. The new team will

support the product marketing teams, as well as overseeing internal and

corporate communications, and community relations.

Tigar’s first task will be to build this team. Plans are to appoint four

PR managers and two PR assistants, although two of these appointments

will be internal moves. When Astra and Zeneca merged, they had two and

four PR staff respectively, but these people have mostly moved either to

other companies or to the international headquarters in

Macclesfield.

Tigar will report to David Gray, sales and marketing director, who said:

’With this new appointment we aim to ensure that our products receive

the right support to be successful, and that these successes are

highlighted both internally and externally.’

It is also expected that Tigar will review AstraZeneca’s agency

arrangements.

The company uses a large number of PR agencies including Kreab, for

corporate PR and healthcare specialists such as Greenlines Healthcare

Communications, CPR Worldwide, Shire Hall International and Lowe Fusion

Healthcare.

Before joining Astra-Zeneca, Tigar was at Swiss healthcare company

Roche, as PR manager for the UK pharmaceutical division. She also spent

five years working for Burson-Marsteller’s European healthcare

division.

AstraZeneca’s portfolio includes the world’s biggest selling

prescription-only ulcer drug Losec, as well as treatments in areas such

as cardiovascular and oncology.
