Publisher Emap is due to appoint an agency to promote

newly-acquired titles Arena and The Face.

The brief is to generate a higher profile for the titles through

consumer and trade PR. Emap is understood to want to reinforce Arena’s

position as an upmarket title and provide more day-to-day promotional

support for The Face.

Nial Ferguson, group marketing director for men’s titles within Emap

Metro, said the company was setting in place a marketing strategy for

the titles. The chosen agency will be appointed on a long-term, rather

than project, basis. ’We want somebody who will stay with us,’ said

Ferguson.

An appointment is expected soon.

The titles were acquired when Emap bought their publisher, Wagadon, for

pounds 20 million two months ago.

Emap’s determination to drive Arena upmarket was confirmed earlier this

month when deputy editor, Greg Williams was appointed to succeed Ekow

Eshun as editor.

The Face has a circulation of 57,000 and Arena sells 46,777 copies on

average. Emap has just appointed an editor-at-large to work across both

titles.
