BORDER LINES: MOSCOW - Putin names press secretary

Vladimir Putin, Russia’s acting president and prime minister, has named Alexei Gromov as his press secretary. Putin was elevated to the presidency after Boris Yeltsin’s surprise resignation on new year’s eve. A career diplomat, Gromov was most recently head of the Kremlin press service.

A career diplomat, Gromov was most recently head of the Kremlin press

service.



He worked in the foreign ministry in various posts from 1982 to 1996,

when he was transferred to the Kremlin. In the Kremlin hierarchy, the

president’s press secretary has greater status than the head of the

press service.
