NEW YORK: The New York State Democratic Committee has appointed

Peter Kauffmann, former deputy press secretary for the Democratic

National Committee in Washington, as its press secretary.

Kauffmann will oversee Democratic communications in a state that not

only boasts a high-profile US Senate race in November (Hillary Clinton

versus Rudy Giuliani), but also one that is considered a must-win in the

upcoming presidential election.

Kauffmann replaces Matthew Hiltzik, who left at Christmas to serve as

corporate communications director for Miramax.

Last summer, Hiltzik worked closely with Clinton on her New York

’listening tour’, prior to her announcement that she was standing.

One of Kauffmann’s tasks will be to enhance the strong communications

set-up Hiltzik established with party activists and news media upstate,

a key battleground in the upcoming Senate race.
