Alliance and Leicester (A&L), the UK’s fourth largest building
society-turned-bank, has promoted Paul Lockstone to replace John Caine
as its PR chief, and is deciding whether to create a roster of consumer
Caine left A&L in November, just after its chief executive, Peter White,
was ousted. He is currently working out his six months’ notice on
gardening leave. White, who had held the job for eight years, left after
the board decided it wanted a more consensual style of management.
Lockstone, who has been media relations head at A&L since February 1998,
took up his new role last week. He reports to the company’s executive
chairman, John Windeler, and oversees a team of 15. While he is
responsible for government relations, internal communications, media
relations, events management and community affairs, investor relations
remains the responsibility of group IR head Stuart Dawkins, who reports
to the finance director.
A&L has worked with Financial Dynamics and Le Fevre on consumer PR
projects in the past, and is currently working with Biss Lancaster on a
Lockstone said: ’I will have a look at how we work with our agencies
because I’m not convinced it is a good use of their time or ours to go
through a pitch process every time we want to do something.’
However, he does not want to prevent regular injections of fresh blood
and new ideas by creating too inflexible a structure.
Alliance and Leicester has retained Brunswick as its financial and
corporate adviser since White’s departure.
