Alliance and Leicester (A&L), the UK’s fourth largest building

society-turned-bank, has promoted Paul Lockstone to replace John Caine

as its PR chief, and is deciding whether to create a roster of consumer

agencies.

Caine left A&L in November, just after its chief executive, Peter White,

was ousted. He is currently working out his six months’ notice on

gardening leave. White, who had held the job for eight years, left after

the board decided it wanted a more consensual style of management.

Lockstone, who has been media relations head at A&L since February 1998,

took up his new role last week. He reports to the company’s executive

chairman, John Windeler, and oversees a team of 15. While he is

responsible for government relations, internal communications, media

relations, events management and community affairs, investor relations

remains the responsibility of group IR head Stuart Dawkins, who reports

to the finance director.

A&L has worked with Financial Dynamics and Le Fevre on consumer PR

projects in the past, and is currently working with Biss Lancaster on a

project basis.

Lockstone said: ’I will have a look at how we work with our agencies

because I’m not convinced it is a good use of their time or ours to go

through a pitch process every time we want to do something.’

However, he does not want to prevent regular injections of fresh blood

and new ideas by creating too inflexible a structure.

Alliance and Leicester has retained Brunswick as its financial and

corporate adviser since White’s departure.
